The Deku tree is now dead, so now you should respect his wishes and go to the Princess of Destiny at Hyrule Castle. Leave the village through the passage next to the sign forbidding anyone from leaving the village (fig. 1). Saria appears while Link is crossing the bridge and gives him the Fairy Ocarina (fig. 2). Link arrives in Hyrule Field and meets the owl Kaepora Gaebora who tells Link about the dangers that await him (fig. 3). He will return often in the adventure and give Link lots of advice.

Once he flies away, Link can head straight to Hyrule Castle. You can navigate there using the mini-map. If you waste any time getting there at all, the day turns to night (fig. 1) and the drawbridge rises . During the night Stalchildren will spawn and attack Link (fig. 2) unless you wait on the road. At sunrise the rooster crows, and the drawbridge is lowered (fig. 3) and you will be able to enter the Market of Hyrule Castle Town. In some places, like Hyrule Field, time passes normally but it stops in other places like Lon Lon Ranch and Hyrule Castle Town. Often the NPCs, dialogue options and events in towns differ depending on time of day. For example, shops are often closed at night.

The village of Hyrule

If you enter the first door after crossing the drawbridge, you will find plenty of pots containing Rupees and a gold Skulltula inside a box. Simply roll into boxes to break them. Afterwards, go to the Market. This place is full of games and merchants of all kinds, but there is very little you can do at the moment. Any NPCs you talk to may give helpful information, so I would recommend talking to a few of them. At the very least, you should speak to Malon (fig. 1) in front of the fountain in the centre of the square. Behind her, there is the Shooting Gallery which has aDeku Seeds Bullet Bag as a reward (fig. 2) if you win. Any more victories will just earn 50 Rupees. Now that the few things available are completed, follow the path behind Malon to get closer to Hyrule Castle. Firstly you must wait for night or be caught by a guard to get Malon to appear. While waiting you can roll into the tree to find a gold Skulltula. Once the night arrives, re-enter Hyrule Castle Town and take advantage of being there at night to find Kiki, a white dog which is often found in the market square. Approach him to get him to follow you. Take the alley to the left of Link when facing the square after arriving and take the door opposite (fig. 3). Talk to the lady who will give you a quarter of heart to thank you for bringing back her Kiki. If it is not him, try again with another white dog.

Hyrule Castle

Go back towards the castle and Malon is there (fig. 1). Talk to her and she will give you a Weird Egg. Climb on the vines just next to her and jump to the other side of the gate without being seen.The path is blocked by two guards, so climb up the grass to the left, not too close to the guard on the left.Stay n the grassy route directly to a climbable wall(fig. 2) to avoid the guards at the gate. Jump into the moat and let it carry you to the far corner. At the end you will see Talon (Malon's father) sleeping. At this point night will have probably cycled through to day, and your Weird Egg has hatched into a Cucco. Set it to a C button and use it next to him so he wakes up (fig. 3). He will run straight back home to avoid his daughter shouting at him.

You can now push and pull the crates into the water. The second snaps right on top of the first one allowing you to jump to the water source with the tunnel (fig. 1). Link is now in the castle courtyard, with only some guard puzzles keeping him from Zelda. You must avoid all the guards (examples of passing them are shown in fig. 2 and 3) to get to the Princess. If they catch Link, they will throw him into the crate area. Once you have passed all the guards simply walk under the arch at the end.

Meeting Zelda

If you look in the window on the right, you will see a painting of Yoshi, Peach, Mario, and Bowser, but as my girlfriend says, we don't care a bit so go and meet Zelda at the end of the garden. She gets excited when she realises Link has the Spiritual Stone of the Forest (fig. 1). She shows that Ganondorf is in Hyrule Castle explains that she is very suspicious of Ganondorf (fig. 2). She believes that the king of the Gerodus is a threat to Hyrule. You must find the 3 Spiritual Stones, which will allow Link to reach the Holy Kingdom in which the Triforce is located. This Triforce has supreme power,as it can grant a wish. If this is pronounced by a man with a pure heart, Hyrule will enter a golden age, but if the vow is pronounced by an evil man, Hyrule will be swallowed up by flames. Here you face more big responsibilities since according to legend, it is a boy from the forest who will have to save the world and Zelda thinks that it is you as you have the Spiritual Stone of the Forest. Zelda gives you a letter and her nurse, Impa (fig. 3), teaches you Zelda's Lullaby: the song of the Royal family. Impa is a Sheikah, from a tribe loyal to Hyrule's royal family, and shows you the way out of Hyrule Castle. You must go to the Gorons who hold the Spiritual Stone of Fire. For that, you will have to climb Death Mountain above Kakariko Village, birthplace of Impa.

Lon Lon Ranch

Before going up to see the Gorons, I advise you to go to Lon Lon Ranch. Firstly, go to Talon by taking the door on the left after entering the ranch. He will allow you to play the Super Cucco-findin' Game (fig. 1) which will earn you a Bottle filled with Lon Lon milk. To win the game, pay attention to where Talon launches the Super Cuccos and if the Cucco you take is not a Super Cucco, launch it far enough not to ensure you do not pick it up again. At the start of the game, turn around quickly and press Z. If you are fast and precise you should see where 2 Super Cuccos land. Alternatively, throw all the Cuccos behind Talon's desk before the game starts so only the 3 Super Cuccos will be in the game area. Once you win, he will give Link the Bottle and jokingly ask Link if he wants to marry Malon, his daughter. Now you should go the enclosure with lot of horses and Malon in it, then speak to her multiple times. Once she mentions the dong her mother wrote, target her with Z and take out your Ocarina (fig. 2). Malon will then teach you Epona's Song which will be used later in the game. If you are on the ranch, playing this music will make Epona, Malon's horse, come running. Before leaving the ranch, head to the bottom of the ranch towards the cabin. There, pull or push the boxes to reach and crawl through the small hole hidden behind the boxes (fig. 3) and find a Heart Piece.

Lost woods

While Impa has shown you where Death Mountain is, Navi wonders what Saria would think if she knew you had to save Hyrule. This is a hint to return to Kokiri Forest. Saria is not at home but Mido tells you that she is in the Lost Woods (fig. 1) which can be found above his house by climbing the nearby vines (fig. 2). These woods are labyrinthine and you can be returned to the entrance any time you make a wrong turn. On the plan (fig. 3), the red crosses refer to teleports to the entrance. This plan is schematic, not every part is square, but the passages are always at one of the 4 cardinal points.

Although you can get some upgrades here, I would recommend first going to the Sacred Forest Meadow.(right, left, right, left, straight, left, right). To find it without a map, just listen to which direction the music comes from. If the music gets louder when approaching an entrance, you are going the correct way. Kill the Wolfos to open the gate. Target it with Z, defend with R until it has attacked or its back is turned, then you can attack it (fig. 1). Use the mini-map to navigate through past the gate to the north square where Saria is located. Along the way, Mad Scrubs will attack with 3 seeds at a time, so if you want to defeat them just approach with your shield raised. When you reach Saria, she will teach Link Saria's Song (fig. 2), which allows Link to speak to Saria whenever you wish and is required for advancing the main story with the Gorons. To exit it is easier to take the shortcut of jumping along the walls by climbing the ladder at the bottom of the steps. A hole can be found beneath Link when you do this, which leads to a fairy fountain where Link can stock up on a Fairy with the Bottle. Return to the entrance of the Lost Woods and enter the Lost Woods again to get some upgrades. First go left, stand on the trunk, and then take out your Ocarina and play Saria's Song (fig. 3) to Skull Kid to get a Heart Piece.

Take another left and beat the Business Scrub (fig. 1) to be able to buy greater Deku Stick capacity, which is 1 of 2 Deku Stick upgrades in the game. Go back to the start and go right from where you would enter the Lost Woods. There, aim for the target in the centre (fig. 2) and hit it 3 times in a row to get a Deku Seeds Bullet Bag increasing Deku Seed capacity by 10. Then jump down and stand on the trunk (fig. 3) to participate in a mini-game with the Skull Kids. Use your Ocarina to repeat the song they play. Each time they add an extra note and if you complete it 3 times in a row, they will give you a Heart Piece. For now, all that remains is to collect bugs in a bottle to find the Skulltulas in soft soil locations, 3 of which are nearby. From the entrance of the Lost Woods go left twice to find soft soil and let the bugs loose there. Leave and enter the Lost Woods again and go right,left,right, left to find another. The last is behind the shop in Kokiri Forest.
